3) Three migration options for all data

Migration strategies:

Basicly there are 3 ways to migrate from you're old disk to your new disk depending on the situation you are facing. In order of increasing compexity and more time consumption:

  • Plan A: full system backup of old drive and restore to new drive; the easiest way;

  • Plan B: clone your old harddisk to the new harddisk; this is more complicated because not all cloning software deliver a bootable new disk after cloning. And there are different options to choose: clone the whole disk or seperate partitions.

  • Plan C: new installation of windows and copy user data, drivers en install all software again. Thats what I did because system backup and cloning didn't function due to disk errors. Two upsides:
    • the ideal moment to clean up everything on the disk;
    • I used software that is able to make a windows bootable external USB disk. Now I can boot on my laptop form an external drive even without an HDD in the laptop itself.
Requirement: a legal Windows licence. It is a product key consisting of 25 characters. Usually it is printed on a sticker on the bootom of your laptop. Its needed to activate the new windows installation.

I also tried to restore windows to factory settings on the new disk using the ACER recovery software on my old disk but it did't work. Problably to much changes during the last 3,5 years on my harddisk.

  • ad 1: mostly unattended but could take a long completion time. Backup and restore will each take about 1 hour per 100 GB of data; cloning will take 100 GB/hour;
  • ad 2: copying userdata means not only individual files and folders but als application data. For example windows live mail data is stored in specific formats. To install software means you have to reinstall all the application software you installed after you bought the laptop. This includes for example antivirus software so you need the according licence key to reinstall. Also al your automated login userid's and paswordss will be lost. So write them down before you start;
  • ad 3: drivers are needed to make the hardware in your laptop work properly. This envolves your ethernet network card, WIFI network card, your screen, etc. Althouhg now a days its very easy to download drivers from the internet, your drivers may be old or very specific and its better to keep them save.

Steps and discission three:

A:  calculate disk space needed during process including temporarely needed diskspace;

B: Enough diskspace available?
  • YES: proceed
  • NO: 1) clean disk; 2) exclude data from migration proces; 3) store data else where;

C:  does full system backup using windows work properly?
      make a full system backup anyway in case something goes wrong

D:  YES: plan A is in place. Look how much diskspace it takes. A full system backup
      requires about 10% more diskspace then the total volume of the data to backup;

E: NO: try to solve the problem:
  • look into eventlog of backup proces (make customized view filtering source = “backup”; it list all the events concerning the backup proces);
  • perform disk check to look for bad sectors (see page "disk errors / bad sectors");
  • make backup of whole disk using SYNCBACK: it will backup a lot of files and will stop the first file that could not be backuped; that file or disksurface is corrupt (see page "disk errors / bad sectors");
  • enlarge the size of partition “SYSTEM RESERVED” to 300 MB;
  • enlarge size of volume you want to backup to;

F: problem solved? If YES Plan A.

G: If NO: (full system backup still not working.)

H: Then try cloning proces: Plan B:
     first try cloning only system files and find out wether new disk boots in laptop;
  • if YES: clone rest excluding files on bad sectors: done.
  • if NO: solve problem depending on fault encountered.
          - if bad sector: see page "disk error / bad sector";

J: Cloning proces is working properly? Check by booting from the clone just made:
  • YES: done
  • NO:
    • check file system on clone; compare clone with original;
    • not able to solve problem? Then Plan C: reinstall windows
