No spare external disk? Use HDD holder with USB interface.
If you don't have a spare disk with USB
connector you need a SATA diskholder with USB connector to put your
old disk in so you can use it when the new disk is in the laptop
my disk holder: install disk in holder you're self docking station: ready to use
(no powersupply included) with own powersupply

The holder I used:
- store it somewhere save; now you have a backup of your old system that will work when installing the disk back in the laptop in case of emergency. Or when you are missing data on your new disk its still available on the old drive;
- or whipe the disk (wait a couple of weeks to see if you're not missing anything on you're new disk) and use it as an external USB drive. Maybe to make full system backups?
Important using this kind of holder:
although an USB connector is able to supply power, an old HDD disk
needs two USB connectors to get sufficient power. The SSD disk
doesn't need both connectors because of the lower power consumption.
An other option, when the new disk is a
HDD type, is to connect the holder to a powercable, 5 Volt and at
least 1 Ampere througput (not delivered with the holder). Last
option is to use an active USB hub. An active USB hub contains
multiple USB ports and is connected to the powernet.
When done the drive can be connected to
your laptop and you should be able to use the disk. Check this by
accessing the disk. There is nothing on the disk and it isn't
formatted. So you should only see a replacable new diskdrive in the
list with storage devices.
